In the 2013-14 school year, Geometry classes taught by Jeff Sabin began a unit on the surface areas of shapes. After learning and reviewing formulas, students used their knowledge to design a parachute with a maximized drop time.

Students sketched plans, calculated the parachute's surface area and then constructed their actual design. Students evaluated their designs when they dropped the parachutes from a landing at Metro, then recorded landing times with different weights added to the parachute canopy.
