Metro students made a June service trip to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota through Re-Member. Re-Member (www.Re-Member.org) a South Dakota-based organization is guided by the aspirations of the Oglala Lakota Indian communities they serve, and seek to improve the quality of reservation life through relationships, shared resources and volunteer services.
During the week long trip the group completed construction-based projects. Some of work projects included skirting trailers, building and delivering outhouses, making bunkbeds and working at a renewable energy center. Also during the trip the Metro group connected with Metro graduate Saige Wright. Saige was part of the Metro trip in 2013 and has stayed committed to and involved in the reservation, most recently being accepted for an internship scheduled at the same time as Metro's trip was scheduled.
In their free time the Metro group traveled to the Wounded Knee Massacre site and hiked through the Badlands. Teacher Mary Vizecky coordinated both the 2013 and 2016 trips, teacher Sarah Collingsworth joined Mary on this trip. Both agreed these volunteer service trips are life changing for both staff and students.
